Triple Crown Winner Retires To Ridgemont Highlands

One of South Africa’s most exciting stallion prospects around is set to retire to Ridgemont Highlands for 2022 breeding season.

The magnificent Malmoos, winner of the World Sports Betting Triple Crown in 2021, is set to join Ridgemont Highlands’ already impressive stallion roster, and he looks an enviable addition to Ridgemont Highlands’ stallion line up.

An expensive yearling purchase, Malmoos is a top-class son of multiple Champion Sire Captain Al, while his dam is a stakes-winning half-sister to prominent Cape stallion Master Of My Fate. He really does appear to have it all!

Knocked down to Shadwell South Africa for R4 400 000 at the 2019 National Yearling Sale, Malmoos was the second highest priced yearling sold at the sale.

Sent into training with Mike de Kock, Malmoos went on to win seven of his 12 starts, including the Triple Crown; encompassing the G2 Gauteng Guineas, G1 SA Classic and G1 SA Derby, of 2021.

He was also victorious in both the G3 Palacebet.co.za Graham Beck Stakes and G2 Avontuur Estate Concorde Cup, with Malmoos set to retire to stud with five graded stakes wins to his name.

The bay proved as versatile as he was talented, with Malmoos winning from 1200m to 2450 metres in the style only a top-class racehorse can.

Malmoos is a son of former Cape Guineas winner Captain Al – South Africa’s Champion Sire in 2014-2015 and 20117-2018.

Captain Al, the first South African stallion to sire more than 100 stakes winners, was also Leading Sire of 2YOs in South Africa on no fewer than eight occasions, and his lengthy list of champions include the likes of All Is Secret, Always In Charge, Captain Of All, Captain’s Lover, Carry On Alice, Celtic Sea, Cloth Of Cloud, Kasimir, and One World.

Captain Al, whose progeny also include current star filly Captain’s Ransom, has already shown signs of promise as a sire of sires, with his sons at stud including the proven Captain Of All and the very exciting William Longsword.

Malmoos, who is bred on the same Captain Al/Fort Wood cross as G1 Cape Guineas winner William Longsword and triple G1 winner Captain America, is out of the Fort Wood sired Spook Express Handicap winner Justthewayyouare.

The latter is currently dam of five winners, with Justthewayyouare also dam of Malmoos’ talented full-brother, and dual G3 winner, Captain Splendid.

From one of the best families in the stud book, Justthewayyouare, a daughter of multiple G1 winning champion Promisefrommyheart, is a half-sister to G2 Premier Trophy and G2 Peninsula Handicap winner Master Of My Fate, and to the dams of graded stakes winners Due Diligence, Ghaalla and Hashtagyolo.

Master Of My Fate has become one of South Africa’s most successful sires and was the country’s second Leading Sire by stakes in 2020-2021. His progeny already include an Equus Champion in the form of Tempting Fate, as well as a pair of G1 winning daughters in Sentbydestiny and Zarina respectively.

Malmoos looks set to join the likes of Captain Al, Dynasty, Jet Master, Vercingetorix and What A Winter in becoming another top-class South African bred stallion!
