A gelding operation appears to have done the trick for talented three-year-old Crimson King, with the latter running out a comfortable winner of Saturday’s G3 World Sports Betting Pocket Power Stakes (2400m), the final leg of the Becoming Champions Winter Series, at Kenilworth racecourse.

Runner up in the G3 World Sports Betting Legal Eagle Stakes last time out, Crimson King reversed the form with Legal Eagle Stakes victor Hoedspruit in no uncertain terms on Saturday.

Given a well-judged ride by Morne Winaar, the Glen Kotzen trained gelding stalked the front running Port Elizabeth raider Jaeger Moon.

With the latter dropped out of contention, Crimson King and Hoedspruit settled down to fight out the finish, only for the Kotzen charge to draw clear in the closing stages and win going away by two and three quarter lengths.

Hoedspruit was game but well beaten in second spot -but finished seven lengths clear of the third place finisher, and favourite, Somerset Maugham.

Crimson King claimed his first graded win in a time of 162.29 seconds, with the Ridgemont Highlands bred three-year-old having now won twice from ten starts.

He had shown smart form at two, when beaten less than a length when third in the G1 Premiers Champion Stakes but failed to recapture the form early in his three-year-old campaign.

One of 77 stakes winners for Ridgemont Highlands’ late, top-class sire Dynasty, Crimson King is out of the Mogok mare Cup Of Rubies, a three time winning half-sister to G1 Vodacom Durban July winner Hunting Tower. The latter was sired by Fort Wood -the grandsire of Crimson King.

Crimson King was knocked down to Glen Kotzen for R200 000 at the 2019 KZN Yearling Sale.
