William Robertson (Rafeef) Leads Home Bard Of Avon (Var) And Team Gold (Twice Over)
Ridgemont Highlands achieved a notable feat when Ridgemont Highlands bred horses, William Robertson, Bard Of Avon, and Team Gold finished 1-2-3 respectively in Saturday’s Bloodstock SA Sales Cup (Non-Black Type) (C&G) (1400m).
Fittingly, the winner William Robertson was sired by Ridgemont Highlands’ boom sire Rafeef – South Africa’s Leading First Season Sire of 2020-2021.
An eye catching third in last Saturday’s G1 Premiers Champion Stakes, the Corne Spies trained William Robertson was the object of sustantined betting support for Saturday’s R400 000 and was backed down to start a 20-11 shot.
Under a well judged ride from recently crowned Champion Jockey Lyle Hewitson, William Robertson settled well off the pace.
Hewitson bought his mount with a strong late challenge down the centre of the track, with William Robertson hitting the front 100m from home before going on to score by a head, at the expense of tote favourite Bard Of Avon.
The latter, in turn, finished a length clear of the game Team Gold back in third, with Team Gold a further two and a bit lengths in front of Gaudis Masterpiece.
Now a two-time winner from five starts, William Robertson claimed the R180 000 first prize in a time of 85.11 seconds.
A R500 000 buy from the 2020 Bloodstock South Africa National 2YO Sale, William Robertson is out of the three-time winning Trippi mare Massachusetts.
