Canford Cliffs’ Son Lands Lord Reims Stakes

While Ridgemont Highlands resident stallion Canford Cliffs has made an explosive start with his first South African bred crop of runners this season, his Australian progeny are also keeping the star miler’s name in lights, and Canford Cliffs enjoyed more Australian success on Saturday when his son Canford captured the G3 Lord Reims Stakes at Morphettville.

Trained by Ryan Balfour, the gelded Canford ran out a just more than one length win of Saturday’s 2600m contest, under jockey Will Price.

It was a breakthrough stakes win for Canford, who stayed on gamely in the closing stages to win a gutsy contest.

Seven-year-old Canford, who is out of the Encosta De Lago mare Sorenstam, has now won seven times in all and will now likely head to the A$300,000 G2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) on March 14.

The gelding was sold for A$62,500 by Blue Gum Farm at the 2016 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale and he has now earned in excess of A$300 000.

Canford is the 20th stakes winner for Ridgemont’s resident sire Canford Cliffs, whose progeny have already earned in excess of R333,000,000 in prize money.

Currently the leading first season sire in South Africa, Canford Cliffs made waves earlier this season when his son Cliff Top ran out a facile winner of the Listed City Of Cape Town Summer Juvenile Stakes at Kenilworth.
